Still, Epps, the pride of La Salle Gardens, Thirkell Elementary-Middle School and Northwestern High School (Class of 1989), would soon discover that the event she was presenting that afternoon at the Wright Museum — the second annual Detroit Doll Show — had special meaning to people here, as well.

“The weather was so bad that they started shutting stuff down in the city. But folks showed up (for the Doll Show), they still showed up,” Epps recalled, choking up with tears in her eyes as she spoke. “My show was being held downstairs in classrooms at the museum and there was a tribute to Nelson Mandela upstairs. But more people (about 100) showed up for my show. We had people who had caught the bus to come; a couple of people said they had been in accidents or spinouts, and they still made it. There was something magical about that show, and right then I knew it was something that I couldn’t give up.”

<img alt="Images from the 2013 Detroit Doll Show during the snow storm. Extended hospital stays and heavy pill intakes also followed, until finally Epps began to take control of her fight when she made up her mind to “go in hard to heal myself and get off everything” in her late 20s. My sister (Cathy) gave her a perm and my mom (Earnestine) made her a couple of outfits. And Judy gave me strength because when I was going through changes, Judy was always there. If girls at my show can find themselves a Judy like I did to help them through their life’s journey, they will be blessed.”

The Detroit Doll Show

When: Saturday, Nov. 12 (11 a.m. - 6 p.m.)

Where: Marygrove Conservancy, Madame Cadillac Building, 8425 W. The Butterflyy Garden and Black Doll Museum will be breaking ground in 2021. We are seeking support by way of our gofundme page at https://gf.me/u/yk3uf8

The Butterflyy Garden and Black Doll Museum will provide fresh flowers, a few fruits and vegetable and a whimsical landscape of fairy decor with butterfly seating, pond and gazebo. The indoor shipping containers will house the permanent and rotating doll exhibit with doll making workshops, art classes and other health related courses. Hosting the Detroit Doll Show allows me the freedom to be a kid again without judgement and I LOVE IT! Many adult doll collectors feel the same who bring their Reborn Dolls to the Detroit Doll Show. Self expression is what we advocate because it's good for your health.

I missed out on some fun moments during my childhood due to being diagnosed with lupus as a girl, but I am grateful that I have the opportunity to play and entertain with no worry of the Side EYE <span class="_6qdm" style="background-image: url("https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/t6f/1/16/1f612.png"); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-size: contain; color: transparent; display: inline-block; font-family: inherit; font-size: 16px; height: 16px; text-shadow: none; vertical-align: text-bottom; width: 16px;">😒 of critism at the Detroit Doll Show. What life has taught me...So as you grow through life and things get tough as they will because they are Teachable Opportunities that may sting pretty bad, you are going to need to make new adjustments and the only true source that's gonna save you is YOU! BE YOUR OWN super HERO!

You never know who is watching you as you move through life working to be the best you through turbulent times. And your work is just to be a blessing to someone else because you understand what it feels like to be down and out from a tramatic experience. This makes the award even sweeter.

When I read the words on the award this moved me the most: "Admires and idealized for courage, outstanding achievements and noble qualities with skills representing the power to create, nurture, accomplish and even exceed goals in a dignified manner conquering challenges along the way."

Thank You Raquel Hardy for the recognition and the support along my journey of empowering women and girls.Sandra L. The Detroit Doll Show is coined as “the largest of its kind in the Midwest,”
because it caters to African American children, women and collectors with an
emphasis on honoring black heritage. The Detroit

dolls of color. It has been featured in the Michigan Citizen, The Detroit
News, BLAC Magazine, The HUB Detroit, Metro Parent, American Black Journal/PBS,
Rhythm and Praise with Dr. Deborah Smith Pollard on Mix 92.3 FM WMXD, “Small
Talk with Mark Lee on WXYT 1270, Black Doll Collecting and Dolls Magazine.
successful show! I’m so glad I was able to attend this year and to gift tickets
to some first timers. I overheard several attendees say how well the show
compliments and represents us and they were so right and there was a sea of
happy smiling little faces to prove it.”
Did you know that
Dolls played a pivotal part in the US Supreme Court decision to legally end
segregation in Public Schools in the Brown V. Board of Education case?

It
was in the 1950’s school segregation was mandated by law in 17 states. At the
time Thurgood Marshall was Chief Counsel for the National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). It was a 55 year old separate but equal
doctrine decreed. The NAACP had to work to convince the US Supreme Court that
segregation in and of itself was unconstitutional to make their case, that’s
when Attorney Marshall and his team of lawyers needed to provide proof to
demonstrate that equal educational opportunities for Blacks (African Americans)
was impossible to achieve in a segregated system.

Attorney Marshall sought out to find the outstanding
couple who both held doctorates in Psychology Mr. Kenneth and Mrs. Mamie Clark
to repeat their experiment they had done with the School Children from Clarendon
County, South Carolina in New York City in the 1930’s. The Clarks were
conducting a study on the effect of segregation of Black Children in their
preparation for the Briggs V. Elliott Case. This was the first of five cases
argued that would come before the Supreme Court.

“In the Experiment, the Clarks handed black children four
dolls. The dolls were identical except that two had a dark-colored skin and two
had light-colored skin. The Clarks asked the children questions such as which
dolls were “nice” and which were “bad” and which doll is most like you.

The results of the test showed that the majority of black
children preferred the white dolls to the black dolls, the children saying the
black dolls were “bad” and that the white dolls looked most like them. To the
Clarks, these test provided solid proof that enforced segregation stamped on
African American Children with a badge of inferiority that would last the rest
of their lives. The argument swayed the US Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl
Warren, in writing the Court’s Opinion, noted that the legal separation of
black children gave them ‘ A feeling of inferiority as to their status in the
community that may affect their hearts and minds in a way unlikely to ever be
undone…’

Curves Matter with our Dolls

As time move forward it's good to see that the "standard of beauty" slowly but surely is making a change for the TRUTH. Not every Girl or Woman is skinny. We come in different sizes, shapes, and height.

Georgette Taylor a doll designer was the Co-Founder and VP of Big Beautiful Dolls, Inc where the first full figured 12 inch Fashion Dolls was created in 2000. The Dolls included Dasia (Africa American), Dawn (Caucasion) and Dena (Latina).

Ms. Taylor then founded "I am Beautiful" Doll Company which consist of limited edition dolls that are curvy (full figured) and hand painted. "Nikia" the first doll produced by the "I am Beautiful" Doll Company was revealed at Sandy's Land 2015 Detroit Doll Show. The doll is hand painted by Georgette Pressler of Devious Body Art. "Nikia" comes signed with a Certificate of Authenticity and a special edition trading card.

Booty Babe Art was started by Spencer Davis where in 1998 he started to add clay to a relatively skinny 12" fashion doll. His dolls are a bit controversial because some people thinks he over sexualize his doll forms, however. Spencer is said to be expressing his passion for toy collecting and sharing his wonder for the variety of female beauty.

In 2013 Mattel Barbie sales dropped 13% then sales dropped 16% in 2014 prompting the company to start thinking about re-branding. Mattel Chief Brand Officer Juliana Churgg stated "We needed to reconnect with Moms and reaffirm the positive values of the brand in a really fresh and engaging way." It was November 2016 that Mattel announce the launch of their plus size Barbie. In January 2017 the Curvy, Petite and Tall made their way into our world.

We know that the long standing criticism over its unrealistic body proportion of dolls produced by Mattel helped to trigger the development of their Barbie Fashionistas Dolls: Curvy, Petite, and Tall. These Barbie Dolls come in 7 skin tones, 2 eye colours and 24 hairstyles. What a smart way for Mattel Inc. to resurge their sells of Barbie. The photo below gives a true to form of realistic sizes.
